Geologist - CO-OP Student
[Company] is a wholly owned subsidiary of the global oil and gas company [Company]. [Company] is the world's fourth-largest oil and gas company whose growth is driven by the talent and expertise of over 95,000 employees in more than 130 countries.

[Company] is creating a team in Canada that draws on local knowledge and expertise needed to operate in Alberta's oilsands, while utilizing the Group's international experience. We have big expansion plans for our Alberta operations.

Along with big plans, comes big opportunity. You will play a crucial role in achieving [Company]'s goal of becoming a leading producer in the Alberta oilsands. The job will provide input to the following TEPCa assets:

  • TEPC has 5 exploration leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands Province,
  • Mine project on the [Company] lease,
  • 50% participating interest in ConocoPhillips operated Surmont SAGD project,
  • 50% Operating interest in the Northern Lights project. The job will also provide input to the Evaluation of Exploration domain and external company resources for eventual business transactions.

One of the objectives of this project is to deliver synthetic geological maps at the Athabasca area scale. The objective of these maps is to identify regional trends, by integrating detailed studies performed over the past years, which could help frame the lease-scale evaluations.

The focus for this internship opportunity is on Sedimentology, Stratigraphy and Fluid Synthesis:
  • The objective is to construct a sedimentological and stratigraphic framework for the more detailed local studies, and carryout a preliminary screening of bitumen fluid properties within this framework.
  • To achieve this goal a regional stratigraphic model needs to be constructed and implemented into the database. This will be carried-out by reviewing the number of wells currently in the synthesis and their geographic distribution to determine how many more wells need to be added (from AccuMap, LogTech, ERCB cores, data-room
  • to have a minimum distribution over the area in order to have coherent maps. Once the correlations, sequence stratigraphic and formation picks have been validated and propagated (at Athabasca and sub-zones scale) synthetic maps will be issued.

The aims of the Fluid and PVT synthesis are to:
  • Assess regional-scale variations of parameters of primary importance for thermal mechanisms including bitumen viscosity, gas oil ratios and API,
  • Investigate how migration and biodegradation impact vertical fluid properties,
  • Develop an understanding of bitumen PVT and rheological properties in relation with thermal and other recovery mechanisms.
