Geophysical Applications / Modeling Specialist
Job Description
Working under the mentorship of an experienced geophysical applications specialist, you will be responsible for producing advanced integrated 2D and 3D seismic models, both structural and stratigraphic, to assist in seismic interpretation projects. Initially, as part of Imperial Oil's Geoscience Early Career Development Program, in your first two years you will rotate through two or three different business units and projects selected from active exploration, development and production programs (Western Canadian Basin conventional / unconventional, Oilsands, Beaufort-Mackenzie, East Coast, New Opportunities, Technology). Significant interaction / training with [Employer]'s geophysical modeling specialists in Houston will occur as part of specialist accreditation in this Calgary-based position.
 
Your responsibilities (mentor-assisted) will include working on:
  • Supporting the advanced seismic modeling needs of exploration, development and production projects from Canadian frontier and W. Cdn. basin conventional and unconventional business units
  • Conducting time-depth conversions, amplitude-vs-offset studies, complex seismic inversions, spectral decomposition, fluid-replacement etc. seismic modeling studies at both prospect and regional scales using 2D, 3D, 4D and 3-component seismic data
  • Ensuring technology transfer of state-of-art geophysical modeling tools and knowledge from [Employer]’s core geophysical modeling research group to Calgary-based seismic interpreters
  • Mentoring seismic interpreters in basic geophysical modeling tools and techniques, for example, seismic well ties

Employment Type University Student or Recent Graduate Seeking Full-Time Employment
 
Special Requirements
Post-Graduate M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Geophysics, Physics/Geology, Engineering Physics or Geophysical Engineering
 
An ideal candidate may have a subset of the following skills / interests or have a desire to acquire or further develop in these areas:
  • A strong background in the principles of reflection seismology and fundamental rock properties
  • Exposure to seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation of 2D and/or 3D seismic reflection data, including seismic attributes and geophysical modeling
  • Broad background in structural geology and stratigraphic depositional systems and concepts
  • Strong computer skills; experience in both PC and Unix/Linux environments
  • Advanced mathematical and statistical skills are an asset
 
Prior petroleum industry experience is not required.
Earth science students from across Canada are encouraged to apply.
