Facility Process Engineer
Profile Statements 
The Long Lake Project is a unique joint venture of two companies with a shared vision for oil sands development; Nexen and OPTI Canada Inc. The Long Lake Project is located approximately 40 km southeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The lease is estimated to hold approximately six billion barrels of bitumen. Nexen and OPTI have a 50/50 joint ownership of the lease and plan to produce 70,000 barrels per day using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) to extract the bitumen from the oil sands. We also plan to upgrade the bitumen into a high quality synthetic crude oil using the patented OrCrude, upgrading process combined with conventional hydrocracking and gasification technology.
 
This position is located in Fort McMurray and the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Fort McMurray area.

Position Overview 
 Provide project, process and plant engineering support to Long Lake SAGD operation. Working in response to site production and maintenance management, and working with shift supervisors, plant and field superintendents and CPF technical specialists to ensure ongoing safe, efficient and effective facility operations. 
 
Job Duties/Responsibilities 
 
Accountabilities:
  • The Process Engineer is accountable for providing effective technical support to Operations, Maintenance, by troubleshooting and following-up to the Key Performance Indicators based on lab analyses, mass and energy balance;
  • Provide leadership for the Statistical Process Control implementation at Long Lake : define and implement;
  • Provide leadership in project implementation;
  • Ensure in house engineering changes follow all applicable legislation, APPEGA guidelines, industry codes, standards, and practices including scoped problem evaluations, management of change, designed solutions with risk reviews;
  • Provide technical input for intended changes and integration into existing plant facilities as proposed by various project groups and consultants;
  • Provide responsive engineering on a timely basis where required to maintain plant reliability;
  • Provide direct supervision where required for mechanical engineers, designers, contractors and consultants;
  • Identify opportunities to reduce risk or costs to enhance plant productivity reliability, safety and environmental performance.
Commissioning and start up:
  • Writing, review, and approval of engineered operating guidelines and start-up procedures including the monitoring of compliance to such guidelines and procedures.
Troubleshooting:
  • Recommends actions for optimization of energy efficiency and leads implementation;
  • Trouble shooting Technical Problems and recommendation of optimum solutions;
  • Measurement, monitoring and reporting of equipment operation against guarantees or performance targets;
  • Provide troubleshooting leadership for operations.
Projects :
  • Management of Plant Engineering projects, including design as required. Preparation of PAF `s and Cost control of approved Capital AFE s including economic analysis as required;
  • Site Engineering representation and co-ordination of Large Scale Engineering Projects involving outside agencies;
  • Management of Facility energy and material balances with the intent of optimized consumption and production of steam, electricity and products;
  • Following of sound engineering practices in the maintenance of document control, MOC (Management of change) and project management practices. 
Education/Experience 
  • BSc's: 5 to 15 years of process engineering, experience in an engineering environment involving but not limited to chemical processes, steam generation, energy optimization, and equipment performance evaluation;
  • CET's: 10+ years experience in an engineering environment involving but not limited to chemical processes, steam generation, energy optimization, and equipment performance evaluation;
  • Experience with P.F.D's, P&ID's and Material and Energy balances;
  • Familiar with budgetary processes and project cost tracking;
  • Good troubleshooting skills;
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to work in a flexible team environment;
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP and familiar with simulation or modelling  tools such as pipeflow, Hysys, HTRI .
