Estimator
We are recruiting for the position of Estimator who will be based out of our Leduc office in Alberta.
This Estimator will be mainly focused on oil and gas industrial construction estimates in Electrical and Instrumentation disciplines along with estimating any relevant subcontractor requirements. The Estimator will be accountable for all assigned estimates to ensure accurate cost compilation based on tender documents, site conditions, trade specific factors and industry standards. The successful candidates responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Attending pre-tender client meetings when required
- Receiving tender packages and quickly determining and understanding the base scope, contract style, site and project specifics, construction and tender schedules, areas of risk, length of time to estimate the package, and other major requirements. Subsequently meeting with Business
- Development to determine the fit of the proposed contract with Westwood’s vision in conjunction with current project schedules to determine if we will proceed with estimating the tender package.
- Determining the actions required to complete the tender packages and leading a meeting with Business Development in determining roles and actions items of the internal team to meet the requirements and objectives of the tender packages.
- Creating an internal schedule that will determine when action items of the internal team need to be completed and detailing the estimate and tender review process in the schedule.
- Attend site meetings and make site visits when required to obtain all relevant details to properly estimate projects and support project teams.
- Establish an estimating structure and system which encompasses oil and gas history and relevant experiences to be successful in estimating oil and gas projects.
- Estimate projects with software and be accountable for establishing the real costs of direct labour, indirect labour, general expenses,
- subcontractors, along with any necessary and required factors of a project based on all provided and available information.
- Develop industry specific estimating assemblies in the estimating software.
- Read and understand client standards and implement into specific estimates.
- Attend and make presentation, along with Business Development, at bid review meetings.
- Be part of the initial project team to hand off all relevant project information to the project team and support the project team throughout the project including verification of changes to base scope and estimating those changes.
The ideal candidate for the position will have the following attributes and qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of overall oil and gas electrical construction estimating experience.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Practical industry experience is a definite asset and is preferred (i.e. journeyperson certified).
- Successful completion of a recognized Electrical Engineering Technology program is a definite asset.
- Be prepared to put in required efforts and time to meet the sometimes grueling estimating schedules.
- Must be able to fluently read and estimate all electrical drawings including isometrics, electrical heat trace and instrumentation drawings.
- Established amicable industry contacts with subcontractors, vendors, suppliers and clients.
- Detailed knowledge and experience with electrical labour in relation to tasks as they relate to the oil and gas industry.
- Must be confident of abilities to accurately estimate oil and gas packages based on relevant experiences and knowledge.
- Understands and is able to implement relevant labour factors and escalations from experience and also with support of industry accepted and proven resources (i.e. NECA).
- Be able to interpret, in general terms, drawings from other disciplines including civil, structural and mechanical as they apply to tender packages.
- Ability to identify omissions in drawings and tender documents.
- Enjoys and is passionate about the estimating field as a career.

- Detailed knowledge of current code and practice requirements.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of oil and gas accepted standards and methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required for participation in presentations, meetings, composing letters and reports and daily conversations.
- Ability to multi task.
- Ability manage time and effectively oversee timely decisions and deliverables.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Access and Outlook).
- Extensive knowledge with Accubid estimating software (or extensive knowledge in another recognized electrical estimating software with the ability to switch to Accubid).
- Ability to organize the various functions for which the position is responsible.
- Must be a detailed and analytical individual.
- Willing to compare drawings to narrative, to scope of work, to bill of materials.
- Must keep details accurate, structured and distributed to proper stakeholders in a timely fashion.
- Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques in all relevant areas of the estimating discipline.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of staff as well as clients.
- Exceptionally strong and effective organizational skills.
- Have the drive to succeed.
- Must be proactive in communication with all divisions of the company to ensure proper engineering processes are followed – educate and assist to ensure these processes are understood and followed.
- Be very confidential with all information.
