Senior Construction Manager
Description:
Reporting to the President, the primary role of the Senior Construction Manager will be to oversee all construction and branch operations. In the role of Senior Construction Manager, the employee will review all contracts, advise project managers on specific contract issues as well as the day to day review of all financial and safety statistics regarding construction projects & the Fort McMurray branch office.
The Senior Construction Manager is a member of the Company's management committee, and in this role he / she will direct operations in order to maximize budgeted revenues, profits and customer satisfaction. The Senior Construction Manager will: provide consistency across projects, establish appropriate delivery strategies, and deal with a variety of issues which require experience, judgment, and maturity.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Deliver the Company's operations business plan including development and delivery of operational budgets, optimizing business processes and standardizing operational policy and procedures.
- Responsible for working with the Branch Manager to develop the annual branch operating budgets as well as the overall Departments operations budget.
- Monitor Branch and operations expenditures to ensure that they fall within the approved annual operations budgets.
- Build a team of project managers, field supervisors, & craft personnel to safely deliver quality electrical and instrumentation maintenance & construction services to the marketplace.
- Hire, train, direct, and review the performance of all operations employees.
- Meet company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an on-going basis; performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Review all tenders to surmise the project size and match to the Company's capacity and advise on the risk / reward of each tender.
- Work closely with the estimating & bid proposal group, and support the preparation of tenders as required.
- In conjunction with the President, and legal counsel as appropriate, review and negotiate contracts.
- Adhere to, and facilitate the implementation of, all environment, health, and safety standards. Zero Injuries is the Company standard, and it is the expectation that all employees are committed to this level of excellence.
- As required, take corrective actions regarding HSE deficiencies within his/her department.
- Responsible for development and maintenance of the Company's Construction Execution Manual (CEM).
- On a project by project basis, the Senior Construction Manager will require that each Project Manager tailor the CEM to the specific needs of his project.
- Monitor labour force, subcontracting & material costs on all projects and the branch office and provide direction as required to achieve contractual deliverables.
- Analyze and provide direction to project managers and the branch manager for resolution of financial, sub-contractor, and construction related problems.
- Help resolve any disputes between the Company and Owner/Client that the Project Managers and Field Office Managers are unable to resolve.
- Ensure accurate record keeping is maintained for each project and the Branch Office.
- Provide management review and approval of subcontracts for construction projects.
- Work with Procurement Manager to ensure the appropriate programs are in place to deliver material procurement for projects and branch operations.
- Provide Authority to Expend on behalf of the projects and the Branch Office.
- Ensure that all construction and maintenance services are delivered according to contract specifications within budget and on schedule.
- Establish and maintain customer service standards and jobsite standards.
- Demonstrate role model behaviour to all staff within his/her organization with respect to ethics & integrity as well as positively promoting the company culture, including in particular, Safety, Quality & Customer Service.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external suppliers, Company managers, and customers.
- Other tasks as may be required by the President.
Qualification and skills
- Minimum 10 years experience in electrical & instrumentation construction management
- Minimum 5 years managing and leading construction and maintenance teams
- Detailed knowledge of management and organizational practices
- Detailed knowledge of all aspects of E&I construction including job budgets, job cost coding, project controls, and contract law
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to direct project management and field operations teams
- Detailed knowledge of labour relations issues and practices
- Computer literacy in Excel, Microsoft word and scheduling programs would be an asset
- Be able to work in a team environment
- a strong capability to work effectively with customers without compromising the Company's business focus and ethics
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and multi task in a fast paced environment.
- Qualified Red Seal electrical journeyman should have or be pursuing the Professional, Gold Seal Certified (P.GSC) certification from the Canadian Construction Association, possess a P Eng in a related field or have equivalent professional designation.
- It is also desirable that the individual assigned to this role have Industry recognized Safety, Quality, construction law or construction management credentials.
