Lead - Research (Wetlands & Aquatics)
Position Summary
This role is a working supervisor and manages a team of professionals to provide expertise in the areas of wetland reclamation, fish habitat development and measurement of wetlands and fish habitat impacts and mitigation programs for the Horizon Oil Sands Project. Working closely with aquatic biologists and reclamation specialists as well as mine engineering programs will be developed to manage aquatic environmental programs starting at time of disturbance through to reclamation. This will include development and measurements of a constructed lake and wetlands and the planning and measurement of other mitigation programs.
Specific accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead a team of environmental professionals to meet the fisheries habitat planning and implementation requirements for the Horizon Oil Sands Project;
- Develop strong environmental sustainability standards for the aquatic ecosystems, working with internal and external stakeholders;
- Plan and implement wetland and aquatic research programs including assessments of existing research programs and information gaps to determine future research necessary for the restoration of equivalent ecosystems.
- Plan aquatic ecosystem restoration through research trials and to implement programs into operational practices.
- Develop and maintain budgets adequate to meet requirements for programs.
- Provide environmental support to mine engineering teams and other engineering teams for the Project in meeting approval requirements and providing information on environmental concerns;
- Coordinate research programs with other oil sands companies, research institutes and regional committee programs (e.g. Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development, Cumulative Environmental Management Association, Regional Aquatic Monitoring Program)
- Support regional multi-stakeholder initiatives of CEMA, through active participation in these activities and in coordinating the activities of other professionals;
- Develop plans for ongoing and potential future wetland and aquatic reclamation issues related to the project;
- Management of environmental consultants and researchers conducting work on the Project;
- Provide environmental assistance to the development of the project and future expansions including regulatory and facility applications;
- Participate in regulatory, industry and stakeholder groups as required.
Employment Requirements:
- 10 years environmental experience with a focus on boreal wetland and aquatic research is preferred.
- Master’s or higher degree in a natural science discipline with a specialization in wetland and/or aquatic ecosystems is required.
- Understanding of the regulatory requirements pertaining to oil sands projects, specifically mining and reclamation.
- Environmental field experience and an understanding of environmental issues within Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo would be an asset.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills experience with a proven ability to lead a team of professionals is required.
The location of this position will be the Horizon Oil Sands Project located 90 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
