Manager, Process Engineering, Bitumen Production

OIL SANDS - Developing mining and in situ assets through: Syncrude (12% interest), Fort Hills project (55% owned and operated), and MacKay River in situ project (100% owned and operated).
 
Reporting to the Director, Future Projects, Oil sands, this role is responsible for the development of the design basis for the Bitumen Production Facility, manage conceptual studies at EPC contractors, establish plant configuration options and recommend a final configuration, manage licensing requirements associated with the selected plant configuration, ensure process integrity during the DBM and FEED stages and develop the technical operations plan
 
Frequent travel to engineering offices will be required.
 
Accountabilities
  • Responsible for decisions impacting design of $14B Bitumen Production complex
  • Direct involvement in technology selection and licensing
  • Responsible for process integrity through project design phase
  • Responsible for making key decisions with respect to technology that will be used in the project
  • Develops operational strategy for implementation once project work is complete
  • Oversees and participates in study work carried out by EPCs or licensors
  • Oversees and directs the process design work carried out by EPCs
  • Ensures compliance with local government regulations and environmental regulations
  • Supervises process engineers, including staffing, coaching, mentoring, performance management etc.
  • Plans the workload for the team and determine resources required, staff accordingly
  • Support the training and development for PC staff
  • Develop goals, objectives and work plans for engineering team
  • Defines technical objectives and operational reliability for commercial plant
  • Provides technical direction for RFO, start-up and on-going plant operations
 
Specific Functional/Technical skills
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral, and presentation)
  • Able to distill complex process issues clear decisions
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in dealing with external Licensors and Engineering companies (EPCs)
  • Proven ability to manage highly skilled professionals
  • Proven ability to make independent judgments and resolve issues
  • Self motivated and a high level of energy to be successful in a dynamic project environment
  • Strong non-authoritative leadership skills
  • Able to operate in a team environment and within a matrix organization
  • Excellent problem solving skills
 
General Skills/Knowledge/Attributes
  • University degree in Engineering with APEGGA qualifications
  • Senior engineer with a minimum of 15 years experience
  • Very strong technical knowledge and process skills
  • Knowledge of Bitumen processing, (extraction and Froth-treating) technologies including current state of industry
  • Strong knowledge / experience with large projects
  • Able to create business plans, budgets and control mechanisms
  • Strong business skills
  • Ability to negotiate and influence EPC contractors and licensors
 
We offer a very attractive total compensation and benefit package. Salary administration will be dependent on the skill level and experience of the successful candidate.
