Community Affairs Representative

Shell Canada is currently seeking a Community Affairs Representative.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Senior Community and Aboriginal Affairs Representative, Scotford, this position is accountable for implementation of Community and Aboriginal Affairs strategies related to the Scotford Complex in a manner that is optimally aligned with Shell’s business goals, objectives and strategies.
  • This position is responsible for supporting implementation, documentation and monitoring of stakeholder engagement strategies and commitments delivery in the Scotford Complex area (including strategies and commitments related to operations, approved expansion projects and future growth). 
  • Provides support for on-going issues identification and dispute resolution with multiple and, at times, challenging stakeholders.  
  • Provides stakeholder engagement support for emergency response, mutual aid and Scotford public concern protocol, including follow-up and tracking.
  • Supports the development, maintenance, implementation and evaluation of stakeholder engagement strategies for Scotford Complex
  • Supports delivery of commitments management requirements and, as required, implementation of social performance plans in the Scotford area
  • Provides initial Community and Aboriginal Affairs support to Scotford Complex for emergency response
  • Identifies current and emerging stakeholder issues that could impact operations, reputation and business goals
  • Accountable for stakeholder assessments and consultation activities that align with AOSP and Scotford Complex regulatory processes (stakeholder commitment/communication documentation)
  • Liaise with Communications team to ensure effective internal and external communications strategies and plans are developed and executed
  • May represent company in select community initiatives or committees
  • Responsible for building and maintaining sound key community relationships (local county and industry representatives, local residents and businesses) and resolving/mitigating concerns through effective stakeholder engagement strategies and activities.
  • Shares best practices such as public complaint protocol, resident call in and call out procedure, with key stakeholders including staff, industry, County EMS, non-profit (NRCAER, FAP, AIHA, NCIA) as appropriate
  • Key Challenges: 
    • Geographic distance from other Community and Aboriginal Affairs team
    • Managing multiple tasks with competing priorities and expectations from a variety of team members
    • Communication with difficult parties, at time under tight project timelines
    • Balance between requirements to meet CAA business goals and objectives and managing expectations of internal and external stakeholders
    • Responding to emergency situations with short turnaround
  • Working Conditions:
    • Frequent travel required - within Strathcona County on weekly basis (driving) and occasional travel to Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray
    • Periodic weekend and evening attendance at events as company representative
    • Carries a Pager for emergency response purposes
    • Overtime may be required due to periodic heavy volumes of work, attendance at company events and meetings
    • Normal to high sensory attention, approximately 4 hours/day of computer usage, 4 – 6 hours of meetings/week and phone calls and 8 - 10 hours/month of travel. Normal office environment, physical effort related to set up of special events
 
Requirements:
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Degree or diploma related to social science, business, communications, public relations or resource management combined with 3-5 years of related experience in a business environment
  • Understanding of oil sands and resource development with some knowledge of environmental, land-use, regulatory and social issues
  • Effective team player
  • Good communication (listening, verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational, coordination, planning, implementation and follow up skills
  • Ability to work independently, self-manage and strong planning and self-motivation skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, at times in a cross-cultural setting, with others to support regulatory and business objectives
